I was at a local sandwich shop, struggling to calculate the tip — because let’s be honest, math isn’t exactly my strong suit. As I fumbled with the numbers, a hearty laugh broke the silence.
I looked up and, to my astonishment, it was none other than John Nash — yes, that John Nash, the mathematical genius from A Beautiful Mind.
He offered to help, and I wasn’t about to turn down math advice from a Nobel Prize winner.
We chuckled over my inability to add 15%, bonding over the absurdity of it all — me needing a literal math legend just to pay for a sandwich.
But then the conversation took an unexpected turn. John noticed the book open on the table: 84 Tools of a Mental Health Warrior. His eyes lingered on one particular page — “Daily Check-In with You” Tool.

My Warrior Story
First, I leaned in and shared my story.
For more than 20 years, I battled Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders and PTSD. These challenges didn’t just affect my life — they ran it. I felt so powerless that, at my lowest point, I tried to end my life.
But in those dark times, I discovered something life-changing: mental health is the key to overcoming any challenge.
Armed with that truth, I created the Mental Health Warrior Program — a bold new SELF-HELP approach that puts YOU in charge. Not waiting. Not fixing yourself. Not asking permission. But taking control of your emotions, facing challenges head-on, and building the life you truly want.

Warrior Tool — Daily Check-In with You
I explained to John that the "Daily Check-In with You" tool is designed to help us reconnect with ourselves — especially on days when emotions feel like they’re running in every direction.
It’s a simple habit: take a few moments each day to pause, check in with your mental state and make a small, intentional plan for what comes next.
But this tool isn’t about ticking a box.
It’s about building a deeper connection with yourself — because how can we triumph over life’s challenges if we don’t even know where we stand?
John nodded, clearly intrigued. Then, to my surprise, his eyes lit up with recognition.
“You know,” he said, “I can think of three ways I could use this tool in my own life…”
Example 1: Clarity Before Chaos
John tapped the page thoughtfully. “I think this tool could be especially helpful in the mornings,” he said. “I often wake up feeling like my brain is already sprinting — racing thoughts, half-finished ideas, future worries piling up before I’ve even had breakfast.”
He paused, then added, “But if I took just a few minutes each morning to check in with myself — emotionally and mentally — it would help me slow down and focus. I’d feel less overwhelmed and more able to organize my thoughts for the day ahead.”
I nodded. “Exactly. That’s why this tool works so well. A quick daily check-in doesn’t just quiet the noise — it gives your brain direction. It’s like switching from chaos mode to clarity mode.”

You don’t have to be a Nobel Prize-winning mathematician to benefit from this strategy.
Each morning, before I dive into the day, I do my own Daily Check-In.
I sit in my car or at my desk, take a slow breath, and ask myself two simple questions:
✔️ How am I feeling today?
✔️ What do I need to accomplish — and how do I want to show up while doing it?
Some mornings, the answer is calm and focused. Other days, it’s more like, “Overwhelmed and running on caffeine.”
But being honest with myself helps me choose my next step intentionally instead of reacting from chaos.
That few-minute pause grounds my thoughts, steadies my emotions, and sets a purposeful tone for the day. It’s my way of switching from chaos mode to clarity mode — before the world even gets a chance to throw a punch.
Clarity before chaos — that’s a Warrior move!
Example 2: Midday Mental Reboot
John admitted that by midday, his thoughts often began to spiral — especially when he was deep in complex problem-solving.
“Around lunchtime, I pause and ask myself, ‘Am I on track? Do I need to adjust my approach?’” he explained. “It helps me avoid mental fatigue. It’s like hitting the refresh button for my brain before I waste energy going down the wrong path.”
He added that even a short pause — standing up, stretching, or stepping away for five minutes — can make a massive difference.
“It’s not about quitting for the day,” he said. “It’s about recalibrating so I can finish strong.”
Why does this work? Because when your mind is cluttered, your energy leaks. But when you pause, assess, and adjust, you regain clarity and intention — before frustration pulls you off course.
Our Turn:
I use this same practice when I feel my own thoughts start to scatter — especially when I’m deep in writing or juggling multiple Warrior projects. Around noon, I’ll stop, stretch and take a few slow breaths.
Then I ask myself:
✔️ Am I still focused on what matters?
✔️ Is my energy where it needs to be?
If the answer’s no, I reset. Sometimes that means stepping outside for a quick walk. Other times, it’s grabbing a diet soda and giving my brain a moment to regroup.
That five-minute pause is my midday check-in — a chance to course-correct before burnout sneaks in. It’s not lost time; it’s an investment in finishing the day strong.
Example 3: Warrior Wind-Down
John saw value in using the Daily Check-In tool at the end of the day — both to celebrate small triumphs and prepare his mind for tomorrow.
“Before I go to bed, I take a moment to reflect on what I accomplished and what I could improve tomorrow,” he said. “It’s like tying up the loose ends in my mind so I can actually rest.”
He smiled, then added, “I think it would help me sleep better — less overthinking, more closure.”
And he’s right. Reflection creates peace. It signals to your brain: You did enough. You are enough. You can rest now.

I grab a notebook, or sometimes just sit quietly and ask myself two questions:
✔️ What went well today?
✔️ What challenged me — and how did I respond?
If the day went off the rails, I don’t beat myself up. I acknowledge it, breathe, and remind myself that tomorrow is another chance to rise stronger.
This simple habit helps me release tension and quiet my thoughts so I’m not carrying the chaos of today into tomorrow. Some nights, I even jot down one thing I’m grateful for — shifting my focus from stress to strength.
That short reflection helps me rest easier, think clearer and wake up ready to keep fighting the good fight.

Wrap Up
