6 Quirky Ways to Use a Spoon to Build Mental Health Resilience: The Minions and Me

The other day, I found myself in the middle of something I never thought I’d experience — putting away dishes with a team of Minions. Yes, the Minions. Apparently, I had made a casserole so good that these little yellow chaos goblins decided they owed me a favor.

Now, when a Minion says he is going to “help,” you should immediately lower your expectations and move anything breakable to a secure location. Their version of repayment usually involves bananas, shouting and at least one unexplained explosion. But on this particular day, they insisted on helping with household chores.

I figured, how bad could it be?

So there we were in my kitchen — me trying to organize clean dishes while three Minions argued over whether forks go with spoons, one wore a colander like a battle helmet and another kept holding up random utensils like he was auctioning them off to invisible bidders.

Meanwhile, the spoons had apparently formed a union and multiplied across the counter. Every time I put one away, three more seemed to appear. It was less “putting away dishes” and more “surviving a stainless-steel ambush.”

And that is when it hit me: What if these spoons were not just kitchen tools… but mental health tools?

The Warrior Solutions

Okay, I got a little ahead of myself there.

The truth is, the Minions only became Mental Health Warriors after they heard my story — how for 20 years I struggled with Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders and PTSD from my time as an EMT during high school and college. Those battles left me feeling so powerless that I even tried to end my life.

But in those dark times, I discovered something life-changing: mental health is the key to overcoming any challenge.

Armed with that knowledge, I created the Mental Health Warrior Program — a bold new SELF-HELP approach that puts YOU in charge.

So you can take control of your emotions, triumph over challenges and build the life you really want.

And the foundation of that journey is found in my book, I Triumphed Over Bipolar, Alcoholism and Anxiety Disorders by Becoming a Mental Health Warrior. That book shares my story, along with the mindset shifts and starter tools that helped me begin taking my life back.

But being a Warrior is not just about reading a book or learning an idea. It is about taking action every day.

Which brings us back to the spoons.

Because the spoon in your hand can remind you to take action, strengthen your mental health and have some fun along the way.

So grab a spoon — the Minions and I came up with six quirky ways to turn it into a tool for mental strength.

Tool 1: Spoonful of Calm

One simple way I use a spoon as a mental health tool is by turning it into a quick mindfulness exercise.

I grab a spoon, sit quietly for a minute and hold it in my hand. Then I focus on the details — the smoothness of the metal, the weight of it, the cool temperature and even the way the light reflects off it. I take a few slow, deep breaths and let myself fully focus on that one simple object.

It sounds quirky, but it works.

This simple spoon exercise helps me practice mindfulness by pulling me into the present moment. Instead of spiraling into worry about the future or replaying mistakes from the past, I get anchored in what is right in front of me.

That calm moment helps me face the day’s challenges with more focus and control.

Minions Takeaway:

The first Minion held up a spoon like it was a magical artifact and squeaked, “Spoon… calm!”

Then he plopped down cross-legged in the middle of the kitchen floor and closed his eyes like a tiny yellow monk who had accidentally joined a cutlery-based wellness retreat.

Another Minion tried to copy him, but kept opening one eye to see if anyone was impressed. A third balanced his spoon on his head, declared himself “King of Calm” and immediately toppled over.

But goofy as they were, they actually got the point— one simple object, one present moment and one chance to settle the chaos in our minds.

Tool 2: Chill the Spiral

When I’m feeling overwhelmed or anxious, I use a cold spoon from the refrigerator as a quick sensory reset.

I hold the chilled spoon against my forehead, cheek or hand and let that sudden burst of cold interrupt the spiral. It snaps me back into the present moment and helps me pause, refocus and regain control.

It is like hitting an emotional refresh button — calming the spiral so I can stay in charge of the day.

Minions Takeaway:

One particularly clever Minion darted to the refrigerator, grabbed a spoon and pressed the cold metal dramatically against his forehead.

“Cool down!” he squeaked, looking very proud of himself.

Another Minion instantly copied him, holding two spoons to his cheeks and yelling, “Brain freeze!” while the others scrambled toward the fridge like they had just discovered the championship event in the Kitchen Olympics.

But beneath the chaos, they had discovered something real: a quick burst of cold can break the spiral and help you get back in charge.

Tool 3: The Spoon Mirror Trick

One way I use a spoon as a mental health tool is by flipping it over and looking into the reflective side like a goofy little mirror.

Then I say something positive to myself, like: I’m a Mental Health Warrior! or I’ve got this!

It may look silly, but that is part of what makes it work. Positive words help build mood and resilience, and the spoon mirror adds a little humor to the moment. Seeing my distorted reflection while speaking something encouraging helps lift my spirits and reminds me not to take every hard moment so seriously.

Humor and resilience go hand in hand — and this spoon trick helps me build both.

Minions Takeaway:

One Minion flipped over his spoon, caught sight of his distorted reflection and burst into laughter.

Soon another was flexing like a bodybuilder, one was blowing raspberries just to watch his face wobble, and Kevin stood there proudly declaring, Banana Warrior! into the spoon.

And by the end of it, the Minions were not just laughing — they felt more confident, uplifted and ready to face whatever came next.

Tool 4: Breathe Into Calm

When I feel stress building or my emotions starting to run too high, I use a spoon to help me slow down and breathe into calm.

I hold the spoon near my mouth, take a deep breath in through my nose, and as I exhale, I let my breath hit the metal. I focus on the warmth of my breath against the spoon and repeat this a few times, slowing my breathing more each round.

This helps me settle my mind, calm my body and get back in control. It is a simple way to use my breath to move from tension into calm.

Minions Takeaway:

One Minion — yes, the same one who had been balancing a plate on his head — suddenly held a spoon to his mouth and announced, “Breathe… on spoon!”

He gave it one dramatic puff, fogged up the metal and proudly doodled a crooked smiley face. Another Minion tried so hard he nearly tipped over, and within seconds they were all lined up like a very strange Minion breathing choir.

And just like that, they went from chaotic little spoon goblins to feeling calmer, more centered and more in charge — proving that even a goofy spoon can help you breathe into calm.

Tool 5: Spoon Balancing Act

One fun way I use a spoon as a mental health tool is by balancing it on my nose.

It may look silly, but it takes focus and patience. As I work to keep the spoon steady, my mind has to stay in the present moment. I cannot spiral into stress and balance a spoon at the same time.

That is what makes this tool work. It reminds me that staying steady under pressure often starts with slowing down, focusing and being patient.

Minions Takeaway:

One adventurous Minion stuck a spoon on his nose and shouted, “Steady… steady!”

Naturally, the rest of the Minions had to try. Soon the room was full of wobbling spoons, crossed eyes and tiny yellow weirdos acting like they were competing in the Spoon Balance Olympics.

One Minion even balanced two spoons at once and strutted around like a champion — until he sneezed and launched them across the room.

And just like that, the Minions went from bouncing off the walls to feeling more focused, more patient and a little steadier too.

Tool 6: Spoonful of Gratitude

One way I use a spoon as a mental health tool is by turning it into a gratitude reminder during meals.

Each time I take a spoonful of food, I pause and think of one thing I am grateful for. Later, I can write those down in a journal or simply reflect on them as part of my day.

Over time, the spoon becomes a simple trigger for gratitudeand gratitude helps build stronger mental health.

Minions Takeaway:

As we neared the end of dish duty, one Minion raised a spoon high above his head and declared, “Spoon… thank you!” like he had discovered a sacred treasure.

Another immediately started thanking the salt shaker, the sink and a random banana peel, while Bob grabbed a marker and wrote thank you across his forehead just to make it official.

And just like that, the Minions went from chaotic little kitchen gremlins to feeling happier and more aware of the good things right in front of them.

Wrap Up

By the end of our dish-washing session, the Minions and I had discovered more about spoons than I ever thought possible — and more about their surprising power to help build strong mental health.

As the Minions packed up to leave, with the dishes finally done, I gave each of them a copy of my book, I Triumphed Over Bipolar, Alcoholism and Anxiety Disorder by Becoming a Mental Health Warrior, so they could continue their Warrior journey and maybe even help me create more unique tools.

So the next time you pick up a spoon, do not just think about cereal. Think about mental strength.

Then take action — with the mighty spoon sitting in your kitchen, just waiting to help you build resilience, strengthen your mind and triumph over the day’s challenges!
