How a Piece of Cheese Saved My Life: Bruce Schutter and the 3 Food Rules of a Mental Health Warrior

In a world where people chase dramatic solutions to their problems, my story might sound a little… cheesy. Literally.

A humble piece of cheese did not swoop into my life like Merlin the wizard, waving a magic wand to defeat my battles with Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders and PTSD.

But surprisingly, that dairy delight played an important role in the self-help approach behind the Mental Health Warrior Program — and especially in my book, 3 Food Rules of a Mental Health Warrior.

That book is one part of the Mental Health Warrior Program — a bold SELF-HELP approach that puts YOU in charge. It was built from my twenty-year struggle with Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders and PTSD, and from a suicide attempt that nearly ended my life but ultimately helped give it new purpose.

Now, the program is not just about food. It is about mindset, daily habits and lifestyle shifts that empower you to take charge of your emotions, overcome challenges and build the life you really want.

But back to our friend cheese — because it plays an important role in that journey. We all need to eat, so why not make our choices work for us instead of against us?

By making smart, intentional food decisions, we can strengthen both our physical and mental health — one bite at a time.

So let’s rewind to that moment — and how a piece of cheese helped save my life.

The Day Cheese Got My Attention

Picture this: a regular Thursday afternoon. I’m standing in front of my refrigerator, contemplating my life choices and feeling the familiar weight of my mental health challenges. And then there it was — a piece of cheese.

No, it didn’t speak to me (I wasn’t that far gone), but it did catch my eye in a way that made me pause. Could this small, unassuming piece of dairy be more than just food?

Before you decide I’ve completely lost my marbles, let me explain the 3 Food Rules of a Mental Health Warrior, as outlined in my book.

These rules are simple, but they can be a powerful way to support your mental health through everyday food choices.

Because the magic isn’t in the cheese itself — it’s in how it fits into the food rules.

That is where the real mental health power begins: using food as a tool to build resilience, create more balance and help you face life’s challenges with greater strength.

Food Rule 1: Eat Low-Carb Foods

Low-carb foods can help support steadier blood sugar, and that matters more than people realize when it comes to emotional steadiness. Cheese, being naturally low in carbs, fits this rule well.

For someone dealing with Bipolar Disorder or Anxiety, steadier blood sugar can mean fewer energy crashes, less irritability and a more stable foundation to build on.

That kind of steady energy can also help with fatigue, which often shows up alongside mental health challenges. And for someone recovering from Alcoholism, it may help reduce some of the blood sugar swings that can make life feel even more unsteady.

One slice of cheese might not seem like much, but sometimes mental health improvement starts with one small winone better choice that helps build stability, bite by bite.

Food Rule 2: No Sugar

Avoiding sugar helps reduce the rollercoaster of highs and crashes that can throw both mood and energy off balance. Cheese contains very little to no sugar, which makes it a smart choice when the goal is steadier fuel and less internal chaos.

For someone with Anxiety, that can mean fewer jitters and less of that revved-up feeling.

For someone with Bipolar Disorder, it can mean fewer avoidable swings in energy. And for someone recovering from Alcoholism, avoiding sugar may help reduce cravings that echo old patterns.

Bottom line? Cheese helps keep the chaos down instead of feeding it.

Food Rule 3: Choose Minimally Processed Foods

Minimally processed foods tend to keep more of their natural nutrients and come with fewer unnecessary additives, which can support both physical and mental health. High-quality cheese — made from whole milk and minimally processed — offers protein, calcium and other nutrients that help fuel the body and support the brain.

For someone carrying the stress load of PTSD, that kind of nourishment matters. And the simplicity of minimally processed cheese means fewer hidden ingredients working against steadiness and balance.

It is a reminder that sometimes the simplest foods can help create the strongest mental health foundation.

The Practical Magic of Cheese

So how exactly did this piece of cheese help save my life?

Not because it was magical. Not because it cured Bipolar Disorder, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders or PTSD. But because it became one small, practical tool in a much bigger Warrior approach — and those small tools add up.

Mood Stability:

As someone with Bipolar Disorder, mood swings are a familiar foe.

Cheese gave me a practical way to support steadier energy. The healthy fats and protein helped me avoid some of the blood sugar spikes and crashes that can add fuel to emotional highs and lows.

When I started using cheese as part of smart, Warrior-style snacks, I noticed more stability and fewer dramatic swings in my energy. Cheese did not ride in on a white horse and solve everything, but it absolutely helped me build a steadier foundation.

And as a bonus, it made meals a whole lot more satisfying. That is what I call a dairy-based win.

Anxiety Relief:

Anxiety has a way of sneaking in, and poor eating habits can make it even worse.

By sticking to the 3 Food Rules and making cheese a regular part of my routine, I gave my body more stable fueland that helped calm some of the internal chaos too.

It was not an overnight miracle. It was steady improvement. Cheese became a quiet ally in helping me feel more grounded… and yes, it also made a very respectable partner for nachos.

Recovery Support:

Alcoholism is a beast of its own, often fueled by cravings and the urge to escape.

Improving my nutrition — including adding cheese as part of a balanced, low-sugar, minimally processed approach — gave me healthier ways to support myself without the next-day regret.

Cheese became a symbol of better choices and taking charge of my mental health. That is a lot to ask from one piece of cheese, but to its credit, it showed up strong.

And that is what Mental Health Warriors do too — we use simple, practical tools to help us rise and triumph over life’s challenges.

The Cheesy Takeaway

By following the 3 Food Rules of a Mental Health Warrior, I discovered a new way to support my mental health.

Each bite of cheese was not just a snack — it was one small step toward becoming a steadier, stronger version of myself. It reminded me of a simple truth: small, mindful food choices can create lasting change.

If one small choice can spark that kind of change, imagine what your next choice could do.

That is why, even today, I still smile when I put cheese on a low-carb cracker or melt it over veggies.

So the next time you find yourself struggling and staring into the abyss of your refrigerator, remember this: food is more than fuel — it is part of your Warrior strategy.

Choose wisely, eat intentionally and never underestimate the power of a little Warrior cheese! 🧀
