It started with a phone call. Scratch that—it started with a very urgent phone call from the Hundred Acre Wood.
“Hello?” I answered, wondering who still calls instead of texting.
“Is this the Mental Health Warrior?” said a familiar, honey-slow voice. “Pooh?” I asked.
“Yes, it’s me. Winnie the Pooh. And I’m having a bit of a situation.” I sat up. “What kind of situation?”
“Well…” he paused. “My head feels foggy, my tummy’s grumbly, and I think I’ve been stress-eating honey again. Piglet says I’ve turned into a ‘walking sugar jar with legs,’ and Eeyore keeps mumbling about blood sugar crashes.”
This sounded serious.
“I know food affects my mood,” Pooh continued, “and you said it in one of our talks! Something about fueling your brain and being a Warrior? But I’ve eaten... four and a half pots of honey today.”
Ah yes—classic Pooh.
“I think,” he said solemnly, “it’s time for me to make a lifestyle change to help my mental health.”
How Pooh Knows My Story
Winnie the Pooh may be known for getting stuck in rabbit holes and chasing bees, but don’t be fooled—this bear is a Mental Health Warrior through and through.
He knows my story: how I battled Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders, and PTSD for over 20 years. How I hit rock bottom and feeling powerless, tried to end my life. almost gave up entirely. But in that darkest moment, I discovered something life-changing: Mental health isn’t the enemy—it’s the key to overcoming any challenge.
With that truth, I created the Mental Health Warrior Program—a bold new SELF-HELP approach that puts YOU in charge! Because no one knows your struggles like you do.
The tools in the program help you take charge of your emotions, rise above your challenges, and build the life you really want.
Pooh had been using tools like Mindset Rules and Daily Wins Logs, but now he was ready for something deeper. A lifestyle shift. Starting with… FOOD.
Macadamia Nuts: Pooh’s New Fuel
We met up later that day under his favorite thinking tree. He looked worried, but determined. “I don’t want to give up sweet things entirely,” he said, “but I can’t keep relying on honey every time I feel sad, tired, or foggy.”
“I’ve got just the thing,” I said, handing him my copy of Mind Fuel for a Mental Health Warrior. “Turn to the chapter on Macadamia Nuts. It might just change your life.”
Pooh blinked. “Macadamia... what now?”
“Macadamia nuts. Magnesium-rich, low-carb, naturally sweet in a subtle way, and packed with healthy fats for energy and emotional balance.”
“Do they come in honey pot form?” “No, but they do come in snack form.”
Pooh flipped through the pages, wide-eyed, as I explained the Warrior-worthy benefits of Macadamia nuts:
Magnesium to calm his nervous system
Healthy fats for steady energy
Antioxidants for brain support
Low-carb and no added sugar—unlike his favorite nectar
“Oh, bother,” he mumbled. “They sound... wonderful.”
Pooh's 3 Nutty Ideas for Mental Strength
Pooh rubbed his tummy thoughtfully. “If I’m going to give these a try, I need a plan. Three ways to use them. That’s a nice number, isn’t it?”
“Perfect,” I said. “Let’s hear it.”
1. Nutty Morning Starter
“I shall start my mornings with a paw-ful of macadamia nuts,” Pooh declared proudly, “instead of my usual spoonful of honey. It will help my brain feel less foggy. And maybe I won’t fall asleep mid-thought as much.”
“Smart,” I said. “That’s actually one of the best times to eat them. I do something similar—I call it my Morning Fuel. Just a few macadamia nuts and a cold glass of water, and I’m clear-headed, energized, and not crashing an hour later like I used to with sugary snacks.”
Pooh looked intrigued. “So... it’s like breakfast armor?”
“Exactly. The healthy fats in macadamia nuts give your brain a slow, steady burn of energy—without the wild ups and downs of sugar. Plus, the magnesium helps your nervous system stay calm and balanced. It's basically the breakfast version of a warm hug and a motivational speech.”
Pooh grinned. “And they don’t even stick to the roof of your mouth like peanut butter!”
I laughed. “Even better, they fuel your focus—so you can make it through a full morning without drifting off mid-sentence or suddenly waking up in Rabbit’s carrot patch.”
“Ah, yes,” Pooh said, nodding solemnly. “That has happened more than once.”
2. The Calm-Down Snack
“In the afternoons,” Pooh continued, “when Rabbit’s yelling about the garden or Tigger’s bouncing gets to be too much, I’ll have a small handful of macadamia nuts instead of stress-snacking on honeycomb. I think magnesium will help me not shout at everyone.”
“You’re spot on,” I said. “That’s actually a warrior move. I use them the same way during long workdays—when emails pile up, phones ring nonstop, and my brain starts sprinting in twelve directions.”
Pooh leaned in. “And... they help?”
“Absolutely,” I said. “Macadamia nuts are packed with magnesium, which helps relax your muscles, calm your nervous system, and slow that mental spin cycle we all get caught in. When I eat a few during those ‘I’m about to lose it’ moments, I feel my shoulders drop, my brain get quieter—it’s like hitting a reset button... but tastier.”
Pooh’s eyes widened. “So instead of a honey meltdown, I could have a nut-nibbling cool-down?”
“Exactly! Think of it as an edible exhale. Plus, because they’re low-carb and high in healthy fats, they won’t spike your blood sugar and leave you crashing later. They give your body a sense of calm that actually lasts.”
Pooh nodded slowly, already looking more peaceful. “That sounds... quite civilized. And far less sticky.”
3. The Group Snack (Warrior Style)
“For the evenings,” Pooh said, eyes lighting up like he’d just invented a picnic, “I’ll make a trail mix with macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, and maybe dried blueberries—and share it with my friends! Piglet, Rabbit, and even Eeyore! We could call it ‘Pooh’s Warrior Mix!’”
I laughed. “That’s perfect. Not only are you fueling your brain—you're fueling your community. Food as a connection tool is powerful. I do the same. I make a simple nut mix and bring it to meetings or walks with friends—it turns a basic snack into a bonding moment.”
Pooh tilted his head. “So… we’re building friendship and mental strength at the same time?”
“Exactly,” I said. “Macadamia nuts give you healthy fats for brain energy and antioxidants that protect against stress—but when you share them, you’re also reinforcing support, trust, and the Warrior mindset. You’re literally passing strength from paw to paw.”
Pooh grinned. “And Eeyore might finally perk up a bit. Although I suppose he’ll still complain about the sunflower seeds being too pointy.”
“Let him,” I said. “Even complaining tastes better with macadamia nuts.”
We both laughed, and Pooh jotted down the idea for ‘Pooh’s Warrior Mix’ in his notebook. Which, incidentally, was still slightly sticky from yesterday’s honey incident.
A Warrior Path
Before I left the Hundred Acre Wood, I handed Pooh my copy of Mind Fuel for a Mental Health Warrior.
“This,” I said, “is your guide. Explore it. Experiment. And remember—you’re not giving anything up. You’re trading up. From sugar crashes to steady strength.”
Pooh hugged the book (and maybe sniffed it for nut scents). “Thank you,” he said. “I thought becoming a Warrior would be scary. But this feels... sweet. In a different way.”
“It’s not about being perfect,” I reminded him. “It’s about making choices that strengthen your mental and physical health!”
