It started with a phone call. Scratch that — it started with a very urgent phone call from the Hundred Acre Wood.
“Hello?” I answered, wondering who still calls instead of texting.
“Is this the Mental Health Warrior?” said a familiar, honey-slow voice. “Pooh?” I asked.
“Yes, it’s me. Winnie the Pooh. And I’m having a bit of a situation.” I sat up. “What kind of situation?”
“Well…” he paused. “My head feels foggy, my tummy’s grumbly, and I think I’ve been stress-eating honey again. Piglet says I’ve turned into a ‘walking sugar jar with legs’ and Eeyore keeps mumbling about blood sugar crashes.”
This sounded serious.
“I know food affects my mood,” Pooh continued, “and you said it in one of our talks! Something about fueling your brain and being a Warrior? But I’ve eaten... four and a half pots of honey today.”
Ah yes — classic Pooh.
“I think,” he said solemnly, “it’s time for me to make a food change to help my mental health.”
From Mindset to Macadamias
Winnie the Pooh may be known for getting stuck in rabbit holes and chasing bees, but don’t be fooled — this bear is a Mental Health Warrior through and through.
He knows my story. The 20-year battle with Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders and PTSD. The rock bottom moment when, feeling powerless, I tried to end my life.
And the truth I discovered there: Mental health isn’t the enemy. It’s the key to overcoming any challenge.
That truth became the foundation of the Mental Health Warrior Program — a bold SELF-HELP approach that puts YOU in charge.
Pooh had already practiced Mindset Rules and logged Daily Wins. He understood small actions build strength. But now he was ready for something deeper.
A lifestyle shift — fueled by food.
“I’ve got just the thing,” I said, handing him my copy of Mind Fuel for a Mental Health Warrior. “Turn to the chapter on macadamia nuts. It might just change your life.”
Pooh blinked. “Macadamia… what now?”
“Macadamia nuts — low-carb, subtly sweet and packed with healthy fats that support steady energy and emotional balance.”
He flipped through the pages as I explained the Warrior-worthy benefits:
Magnesium to calm his nervous system
Healthy fats for steady energy
Antioxidants for brain support• Low-carb, no added sugar — unlike his beloved honey
“Oh, bother,” he mumbled. “They sound… wonderful.”
I smiled. “I have three ways you can start today.”
Tool 1: Clear-Headed Morning Energy
Instead of sugary snacks that spike and crash my energy, I start my morning with a small handful of macadamia nuts and a cold glass of water.
Within minutes I feel clear-headed, focused and grounded. No fog. No slump. No mid-morning chaos.
This small shift sets the tone for the entire day:
Better energy.
Calmer emotions.
A mind that’s ready — not reactive.
It may look like just a nut. But it’s Warrior fuel.
Pooh's Takeaway:
“I shall start my mornings with a paw-ful of macadamia nuts,” Pooh declared proudly, “instead of my usual spoonful of honey. It will help my brain feel less foggy — and perhaps I won’t fall asleep mid-thought.”
Pooh tilted his head. “So… it’s like breakfast armor?”
“Exactly,” I said. “The healthy fats give your brain slow, steady energy — without the wild ups and downs of sugar. And the magnesium helps your nervous system stay calm and balanced.”
Pooh grinned. “And they don’t even stick to the roof of your mouth like peanut butter!”
I laughed. “Even better — they fuel your focus. Enough to make it through a full morning without drifting off mid-sentence or waking up in Rabbit’s carrot patch.”
Tool 2: Calm the Afternoon Chaos
When the day reaches that point where everything feels loud — emails stacking, tasks multiplying, stress climbing — I pause and grab a few macadamia nuts.
Within minutes, my shoulders drop. My breathing slows. My thoughts stop sprinting in circles.
Magnesium supports the nervous system. Healthy fats stabilize energy. Low carbs prevent the stress-crash cycle.
It’s a mid-afternoon reset — without the spiral.
Pooh's Takeaway:
“In the afternoons,” Pooh said thoughtfully, “when Rabbit’s yelling about the garden or Tigger’s bouncing becomes too much, I’ll have a small handful of macadamia nuts instead of stress-snacking on honeycomb. I suspect magnesium will help me not shout at everyone.”
He paused, imagining it.
“Exactly. Think of it as an edible exhale. Because they’re low-carb and high in healthy fats, they won’t spike your blood sugar or send you crashing later. They create calm that actually lasts.”
Pooh nodded slowly, already looking more peaceful. “That sounds… quite civilized. And far less sticky.”
Tool 3: Shared Fuel, Shared Strength
In the evenings, I make a simple nut mix and bring it to meetings, walks or catch-ups with friends.
It transforms a basic snack into something meaningful:
💛 Connection
💛 Shared strength
💛 A reminder we’re not alone
Food becomes more than fuel — it becomes a bridge.
A shared snack may seem small, but it can spark reconnection, steady emotions and strengthen support at the end of a long day.
Pooh's Takeaway:
“For the evenings,” Pooh said, eyes lighting up as if he’d just invented a picnic, “I’ll make a trail mix with macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds and perhaps dried blueberries — and share it with my friends! Piglet, Rabbit and even Eeyore! We could call it ‘Pooh’s Warrior Mix!’”
I laughed. “That’s perfect. You’re not just fueling your brain — you’re fueling your community.
Macadamia nuts provide healthy fats for brain energy and antioxidants that help protect against stress. And when you share them, you’re passing strength from paw to paw.”
Pooh grinned. “And Eeyore might finally perk up a bit. Though he’ll probably complain about the sunflower seeds being too pointy.”
“Let him,” I said. “Even complaining tastes better with macadamias.”
Pooh scribbled down the recipe for Pooh’s Warrior Mix in his notebook — still slightly sticky from yesterday’s honey incident.
Wrap Up
“This,” I said, “is your guide. Explore it. Experiment. And remember — you’re not giving anything up. You’re trading up. From sugar crashes to steady strength.”
Before I left the Hundred Acre Wood, I handed Pooh my copy of Mind Fuel for a Mental Health Warrior.
Pooh hugged the book (and maybe sniffed it for nut scents). “Thank you,” he said. “I thought becoming a Warrior would be scary. But this feels… sweet. In a different way.”
So if you find yourself stress-eating your way through the week or crashing from carb overload, take a page from Pooh’s story.
Healing doesn’t always begin with something dramatic. Sometimes, it starts with a snack.
Because Warriors don’t just fuel their bodies. They fuel their minds!
