It was a sunny afternoon downtown when I spotted SpongeBob SquarePants and his whole gang — Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and even Mr. Krabs — sitting on a bench looking unusually glum.
SpongeBob’s normally beaming face was scrunched with worry. Patrick wasn’t his usual bubbly self. Even Squidward looked more annoyed than usual (if that’s even possible).
Sandy quietly fiddled with her helmet, while Mr. Krabs muttered something about “the cost of kelp these days.”
“Hey, gang!” I called out, trying to lift the mood. “What’s going on? You all look like the weight of Bikini Bottom is on your shoulders.”
SpongeBob SquarePants sighed deeply. “Oh, Bruce, everything feels so out of control! Jellyfish migration is weird this year, the Krusty Krab is slow, and don’t even get me started on the rising cost of coral. We don’t know what to do with all the chaos of current events and life’s challenges!”
Having known these guys for a while, I wasn’t surprised they sought me out. They’re committed to being Mental Health Warriors — and they know the value of having the right tools when life gets loud.
The Warrior Solution
For 20 years, I struggled with Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders, and PTSD — a battle that left me feeling so powerless, I tried to end my life. But in that darkest moment, I uncovered something life-changing: mental health is the key to overcoming any challenge.
Armed with that knowledge, I created the Mental Health Warrior Program — a bold new SELF-HELP approach that puts YOU in charge. So you can take control of your emotions, triumph over challenges, and build the life you really want.
“Well,” I said, reaching into my bag and pulling out a copy of 84 Mental Health Warrior Tools, “I’ve got just the thing for you.”
“This topsy-turvy world can feel overwhelming,” I continued, “but one of my favorite tools — the WARRIOR Mnemonic — helps you stay emotionally centered and keep moving forward, one day at a time.”
The group perked up, curiosity lighting their eyes. “Tell us more!” SpongeBob said, bouncing in his seat.
I smiled. “This one’s easy to remember — and packed with powerful Warrior wisdom. Let’s break down the WARRIOR Mnemonic, letter by letter.”
W = Warrior Creed – Bend Not Break
“This is the foundation of being a Mental Health Warrior,” I began. “True strength isn’t about never facing challenges — it’s about bending around them instead of breaking under pressure.
Flexibility keeps you moving forward, no matter what life throws at you.”
I paused and added, “I use this rule anytime life doesn’t go the way I planned — when my mood shifts, stress piles up, or emotions spike out of nowhere. Instead of fighting reality or judging myself, I remind myself to bend. I adjust my expectations, take one steady action and keep moving forward. That’s how I stay in charge instead of letting the moment take over.”
SpongeBob’s Takeaway:
“That’s like when Squidward yells at me,” said SpongeBob SquarePants. “Instead of crying in the bathroom, I can take a deep breath, remind myself it’s not personal and keep flipping those Krabby Patties.
It’s bending, not breaking!”
A = Action – Take Action on Your Mental Health Every Day
“Next, you need to take daily action to care for your mental health,” I said. “Even on the busiest days, carve out at least 15–30 minutes just for you.
Whether it’s journaling, meditating, going for a short walk, or simply sitting quietly, that time is non-negotiable.”
I added, “This is something I practice every day. When my emotions feel loud or my energy feels low, I don’t wait until I ‘feel like it.’ I take action first — even a small one. That daily action grounds me, reminds me I’m in charge and keeps my mental health from slipping into the background.”
Patrick’s Takeaway:
Patrick Star raised his hand. “Sometimes I get really overwhelmed thinking about all the things I haven’t done — like cleaning my rock.”
He paused. “But I could take action by starting with something small, like organizing my shell collection. That would make me feel productive… and way less stressed!”
R = Respond Not React
“Mindset Rule 2 is all about pausing to think before you act,” I explained. “Reacting impulsively often makes challenges worse. But when you slow down and give yourself space to process, you can respond thoughtfully — and that’s how you actually triumph over the challenge.”
I continued, “This rule has been a game-changer for me. When my emotions spike — anger, anxiety, frustration — my first instinct used to be to react. Now, I pause. I take a breath. I ask myself, What response keeps me in charge?
That moment of pause is often the difference between escalating a problem and moving through it with strength.”
Sandy’s Takeaway:
Sandy Cheeks nodded thoughtfully. “Like when SpongeBob floods my tree dome by accident. Instead of immediately grabbing my karate gloves, I could take a moment to breathe and respond calmly.”
She smiled. “That way, we fix the problem faster — and it saves SpongeBob from another karate lesson he didn’t ask for!”
R = Recognize the Power of Your Emotions
“Our emotions influence every part of our lives,” I continued. “Ignoring them doesn’t make them go away — it usually makes things worse.
Instead, when you recognize the power of your emotions and listen to what they’re telling you, you can decide how to move forward with intention instead of getting stuck.”
I added, “This was a huge shift for me. For years, I tried to push emotions away or judge them as ‘bad.’ Now, when something spikes — frustration, anxiety, sadness — I stop and ask, What is this emotion trying to tell me?
That awareness gives me information, and information gives me power. From there, I can choose my next step instead of reacting blindly.”
Squidward’s Takeaway:
Squidward Tentacles sighed. “Well, I get frustrated when my clarinet practice doesn’t go perfectly.”
He crossed his arms. “But maybe if I actually recognized that frustration, I could channel it into improving my technique instead of giving up.”
After a pause, he muttered, “I hate to say it… but that makes sense.”
I = Introspection – Learn Who You Are
“Knowing your values and what truly matters to you is critical,” I said. “When you’re clear about who you are, you can align your actions with your goals — and that’s how you build a life you actually enjoy living.”
I added, “Introspection is something I return to often. When I feel stuck, overwhelmed, or pulled in too many directions, I pause and ask myself, What matters to me right now?
That clarity helps me stop chasing expectations that aren’t mine and start making choices that fit who I am — not who I think I should be.”
SpongeBob’s Takeaway:
SpongeBob SquarePants beamed. “My value is making people happy!”
He bounced a little as he continued, “So when work gets stressful, I can remind myself that my job at the Krusty Krab isn’t just flipping patties — it’s about bringing joy to people through the best burgers in Bikini Bottom!”
O = Own Your Whole Story
“Your past — both the good and the bad — is part of your story,” I said. “But when you own your whole story, you take back your power. You stop letting old mistakes define you and start using them as fuel to move forward.”
I added, “This letter was a big turning point for me. For a long time, I let my past mistakes and struggles keep me stuck in shame. When I finally owned my full story — without minimizing it and without letting it control me — I was able to move forward with clarity.
Owning my story didn’t trap me in the past. It freed me to build a better future, one day at a time.”
Mr. Krabs’ Takeaway:
Mr. Krabs cleared his throat. “Arrr, I’ve made some mistakes chasing money,” he admitted. “But if I own up to those missteps, I can focus on making the Krusty Krab a better place for me crew.”
He straightened up proudly. “Plus, owning my story helps me move forward in me new life as a Warrior — where the actions I take today build the future I really want!”
R = Ready for the Next Challenge – Sustainability
“The final principle is about building habits that prepare you for future challenges,” I said. “Every action you take today strengthens you for what’s ahead. Being a Mental Health Warrior isn’t a quick fix — it’s a lifelong journey of growth, awareness and action.”
I added, “This letter reminds me to think beyond today. When I take care of my mental health consistently — even when things feel calm — I’m building strength for the moments that will inevitably be harder.
Sustainability keeps me from starting over every time life throws a curveball. Instead, I’m already prepared.”
SpongeBob’s Takeaway:
SpongeBob SquarePants grinned. “That’s like practicing jellyfishing!”
He laughed. “If I get better today, I’ll be ready for the big jellyfish migration next season. Future SpongeBob will be very thankful.”
Wrap Up
As we finished, SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends looked noticeably lighter. SpongeBob clutched the notepad where he’d carefully scribbled the mnemonic, while Sandy was already brainstorming ways to incorporate it into her karate training. Even Squidward managed a small — almost approving — smile.
Before parting, I handed them a copy of 84 Mental Health Warrior Tools. “Here you go,” I said. “Now you’ve got access to a whole library of tools to keep growing as Warriors and navigating current events.”
“Thanks, Bruce,” SpongeBob said, his enthusiasm bubbling back. “We’ve got a lot of challenges, but now we know how to triumph over them as Mental Health Warriors!”
“And the best part is,” Patrick chimed in, “these tools work for everyone — even if you live under a rock!”
So when life’s challenges — or your mental health challenges — get loud, grab the Warrior Mnemonic.
Then take action. Apply it in your day. And unlock the power to stay calm, grounded, and in control — even in the middle of the storm!
