Bruce Schutter: My Story Part 2 - My Solution to Life's Challenges

Once I realized that mental health impacts every single area of life, I began to see it not as a weakness to avoid, but as a source of strength I could harness.

If I could learn to manage my emotions — to truly understand and work with them instead of fearing or fighting them — I could use that power to rebuild myself into something stronger: a Mental Health Warrior!

I committed to this every single day. I learned to sit with my feelings — even the ones that used to terrify me. I practiced the tools and strategies that kept me grounded, no matter how unpredictable life became.

And slowly, I began to notice something amazing: I was staying in control of my day instead of letting my emotions run it.

I was at a turning point.

Minor challenges stopped feeling like giant crises. I began to trust myself again. I no longer lived in survival mode, hoping to “just get through” another 24 hours. I started to live each day — to lean into challenges with curiosity instead of dread.

And when the sun went down, I wasn’t drowning in regret or desperately searching for an escape. I was ending my day with pride.

For the first time in decades, I was comfortable with the full spectrum of emotions — joy, sadness, fear, excitement, frustration, hope — all of it. I realized it was never the challenges themselves that had defeated me in the past; it was my inability to manage the emotional waves that came with them.

Now, with the skills and tools of a Warrior, I no longer fear my feelings, and I never hand control of my life over to them. Instead, I face each obstacle knowing that while I can’t control everything, I can choose how I respond. And that changes everything!
