Crunching His Way to Calm: How Andy the “Anxious” Aardvark Triumphs Over Anxiety With Almonds

Andy the “Anxious” Aardvark had tried everything to calm his racing mind.

Breathing exercises. Counting backward from 100. Reorganizing his sock drawer alphabetically (which, yes, is exactly as pointless as it sounds).

But no matter what he did, anxiety always found a way back — especially before work, after lunch and literally anytime someone said, “Let’s talk.”

That’s when Marvin the Mental Health Warrior Cat handed him a copy of Mind Fuel for a Mental Health Warrior and said, “Mindset alone won’t cut it, Andy. You need a snack strategy.”

Andy blinked. “Wait… you’re saying food can actually help my mental health?

“Not just any food,” Marvin purred. “Warrior foods. Like almonds.

The Warrior Blueprint — and Why Almonds Matter

Before we go any further, it helps to understand how Andy ended up here in the first place.

Marvin and Andy became Mental Health Warriors the day they heard my story — how I battled Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders and PTSD from my time as an EMT in high school and college. Those struggles left me feeling so powerless that I tried to end my life.

But in that dark moment, I discovered something life-changing: Mental health is the key to overcoming any challenge.

With that I created the Mental Health Warrior Program — a bold SELF-HELP that puts YOU in charge!

Not of everything that happens. But of how you respond.

A powerful part of that response is understanding the connection between food and mental health — how the right fuel supports steady emotions and clearer thinking. That’s where Mind Fuel for a Mental Health Warrior comes in.

Almonds aren’t just a snack. They’re tiny anxiety-fighting powerhouses — packed with magnesium (nature’s calming mineral), vitamin E (brain cell bodyguard), and healthy fats that help stabilize blood sugar so you’re less likely to spiral just because someone raised an eyebrow in a meeting.

Andy read the almond chapter three times. Then he ate six almonds, puffed out his chest and declared himself a snack-fueled superhero.

Marvin let him have the moment.

Here are three ways Andy uses almonds today — with full Mental Health Warrior flair.

Tool 1: Pre-Meeting Crunch — From Dread to Calm

Andy used to dread Zoom calls. His paws would sweat. His thoughts would race. He’d mute himself, then unmute, then panic-mute again. He once introduced himself as, “Anxious Aardvark — I mean, Andy.”

Now? He shows up Almond-Powered.

Fifteen minutes before any meeting, Andy snacks on a handful of raw almonds. He focuses on the crunch. The sound. The texture. It grounds him.

He repeats his go-to mantra: “I’m calm. I’m capable. And my camera is off… right?”

The magnesium supports relaxation. His energy stabilizes. Suddenly he’s not just surviving the meetinghe’s participating.

Our Turn:

Before a stressful meeting, eat a few almonds. Chew slowly. Breathe deeply.

The crunch becomes a sensory anchor. The nutrients support steadier focus and calmer energy — without caffeine or chaos.

I’ve used this myself. When I first started sharing my story publicly, I’d snack on almonds before Zoom interviews. Instead of spiraling with nerves, I felt steady enough to speak openly.

One small snack became a Warrior ritual. And that ritual helped me show up with courage.

Tool 2: Lunchtime Reset — From Crash to Clarity

Andy used to eat lunch like he was in a race — usually something sugary, carby or straight out of a vending machine. Thirty minutes later? Crash. Spiral. Existential dread.

But now, he builds what he calls a “Warrior Bowl.”

His favorite: spinach, quinoa, grilled chicken, a sprinkle of feta and a handful of sliced almonds.

The almonds add texture, protein and emotional balance — yes, emotional balance. It’s in the book. Look it up.

He finishes lunch feeling grounded, not groggy. Ready to face the afternoon — not Google, “Do aardvarks need mental health help?”

Our Turn:

Toss sliced almonds into your salad, stir-fry or wrap.

Almonds’ healthy fats and protein help stabilize blood sugar — and steadier blood sugar supports steadier mood. You’re not just eating. You’re regulating.

I use this too. When I swapped heavy, carb-loaded lunches for Warrior Bowls with almonds, my afternoons changed.

Instead of battling brain fog and irritability, I had steady energy to write, coach and keep showing up as a Mental Health Warrior.

Tool 3: Snack Attack Strategy — From Panic to Power

Andy still gets anxious. (He’s a Warrior, not a wizard.)

But when that 3 p.m. panic hits, he no longer grabs a sugary granola bar and regrets his life choices. Instead, he reaches for his homemade Dark Chocolate Almond Bites — a few almonds coated in melted dark chocolate and chilled.

It’s his “calm candy.”

A treat that feels indulgent, fuels his brain and reminds him: “I can enjoy this and still support my mental health.

Our Turn:

Make a batch of dark chocolate almond bites. Or carry a small portion of roasted almonds with sea salt as your emergency Warrior snack.

This works because it satisfies cravings while supporting cognitive function — so you snack with intention instead of stress-eating and spiraling.

I’ve done this myself. In my early recovery, afternoons were danger zones. I’d reach for quick sugar to numb stress. When I switched to almonds — sometimes with a square of dark chocolate — it didn’t just calm the craving.

It reminded me I could make small choices that supported my mental health instead of sabotaging it.

That shift gave me back control.

Deep Dive into Power of Almonds

Andy, of course, wanted the science. (He’s the kind of aardvark who reads food labels for fun.)

So we took a quick look at why almonds earned their Warrior status.

Magnesium helps regulate the body’s stress response and supports steadier mood. Vitamin E acts like a brain-bodyguard, protecting cognitive function over time. The healthy fats and protein help stabilize blood sugar — which means fewer crashes, fewer spirals and less snapping at coworkers over email tone.

And maybe just as important? They’re simple.

No prep. No blender. No complicated recipe. Just grab, crunch and breathe.

Wrap Up

“I used to think mental health was only in my head,” Andy says, popping a roasted almond. “Turns out, it’s also in your pantry.”

He grins and holds up Mind Fuel for a Mental Health Warrior. “I still get anxious. But now I’ve got snacks, a plan and yes — almond breath. That’s progress.”

Because Warriors know we can’t eliminate anxiety. But we can choose how we respond to it.

If anxiety has been calling the shots in your day, it may be time to fuel differently — even with something as simple as almonds.

Because sometimes the best way to quiet your mind… is with a Warrior crunch!
