I turned the corner near Main Street and froze. Standing there — looking effortlessly cool — was none other than Ferris Bueller.
Yes, that Ferris Bueller — the legendary master of turning an ordinary day into an unforgettable adventure — was somehow in our quiet little town, dressed to the nines and clearly about to lead a full-blown parade right down Main Street.
I blinked, half-wondering if too much caffeine had finally pushed me into hallucinations.
But nope — there he was, radiating that trademark confidence, grinning like he had the whole day, and maybe the whole world, under his command.
Then his eyes dropped to the book in my hands — One Bag Life of a Mental Health Warrior.
“What’s that?” he asked, leaning in as if he might actually ditch the parade just to hear the answer.
“It’s about letting go of what weighs you down — physically, mentally and emotionally,” I said. “Instead of chasing more stuff, it’s about building emotional resilience through meaningful experiences. The simpler we make life, the more freedom we have to grow, heal and truly live.”
Ferris leaned in, that trademark mix of mischief and wisdom lighting up his eyes. “Life really is all about experiences,” he said. “What good is all the stuff in the world if you don’t actually know how to live?”
The Warrior Path
Now, we got ahead of ourselves, so I told Ferris my story — how for 20 years I battled Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders and PTSD. It left me feeling so powerless that I tried to end my life.
But in that dark time, I discovered something life-changing: mental health is the key to overcoming any challenge.
With that truth in hand, I created the Mental Health Warrior Program — a bold new SELF-HELP approach that puts YOU in charge.
So you can take control of your emotions, conquer challenges and build the life you really want.
And to truly empower people, the program helps them address every area of life — including how to build stronger mental health and find greater happiness each day through the approach of Less Stuff, More Experiences found in my book, One Bag Life of a Mental Health Warrior.
Ferris’s eyebrow shot up. That clearly was not the direction he thought this conversation was going.
And just like that, we were off. Ferris launched into three stories from his legendary adventures — each one packed with the kind of wisdom that showed why he always chose experiences over stuff… and how that helped him build stronger mental health.
Lesson 1: The Art of the Day Off
Ferris leaned back, grin spreading wide. “You know, this reminds me of my greatest life lesson,” he said. “The art of the day off.”
He looked almost nostalgic — like he could still hear the city streets buzzing with music and laughter.
“Remember that epic day off I took? The key wasn’t just skipping school — it was filling it with experiences I’d never forget. I could’ve stayed home and slept in, but what fun is that? Instead, I went to a Cubs game, explored the city with friends and, of course, led an entire parade!”
Because no material thing can match the happiness of taking a day for yourself and filling it with experiences that make you feel alive.
Our Turn:
When was the last time you took a real day for yourself? Not to run errands, fold laundry, or scroll endlessly — but a day purely for joy and adventure.
Here’s a simple Warrior plan to make it happen. Pick one and revel in the benefits:
🚶♂️ Take a scenic walk in a new neighborhood or park and see where the path leads.
⚾ Catch a ball game at your local high school and ride the energy of the crowd.
✨ Try something new just because it makes you feel alive.
Because nothing you buy can match the happiness of a day filled with experiences, joy and memories of your own.
Lesson 2: Seek Out Adventures
Ferris grinned, eyes gleaming with mischief. “Sure, I could’ve begged my parents for a fancy car or the latest gadget — but where’s the fun in that? Instead, I made the most of what I had… like borrowing my friend Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari.”
He smirked. “Now, I’m not saying you should take someone else’s car. The point is — it wasn’t about the car. It was about the adventure it represented.”
Ferris leaned in, his voice softening. “Be honest — do you remember every gadget you’ve owned, or do you remember the experiences that made you feel alive?”
Our Turn:
We live in a world that constantly tells us to buy more to feel better. But the truth? That high from a new purchase fades fast — while unforgettable experiences stay with you for a lifetime.
Next time you’re about to splurge on something shiny, pause and ask yourself: Could this money be better spent on an experience that feeds my soul?
🎶 Go to a concert that makes your heart sing.
🚗 Take a spontaneous road trip with friends that turns into a story you’ll tell for years.
🎨 Sign up for a class that sparks your creativity and reminds you how capable you are.
Because the happiness of a real adventure will always outlast the temporary thrill of buying something new.
Lesson 3: Share the Fun
“One of the best parts of that day off,” Ferris said with a nostalgic grin, “was sharing it with my friends, Cameron and Sloane.”
“Sure, I could’ve done it all alone — but sharing those moments made them ten times better. We laughed, we cried (okay… Cameron cried), and we made memories that will stick with us forever.”
He paused, smiling softly. “That’s the real secret — joy multiplies when you share it.”
Our Turn:
Think about your favorite memories. Were you solo — or surrounded by people who made you laugh, listen, and really feel the moment?
We’re wired for connection. Sharing experiences strengthens friendships, deepens relationships, and reminds us we’re never truly alone.
Next time you’re planning something fun — bring someone along!
🍽️ Invite a coworker to lunch instead of eating at your desk.
📞 Call a family member and share a good story from your week.
😂 Send a funny video to a friend just to make them smile.
Because in the end, the best memories are not about what you do — they are about who you share them with.
Wrap Up
As Ferris and I wrapped up our conversation, I handed him a copy of One Bag Life of a Mental Health Warrior. He caught it with a grin, gave me a nod of approval and strolled off toward his next adventure like a man who had mastered the art of slowing down time.
Watching him go, I could not help reflecting on the heart of the One Bag Life philosophy:
“The true wealth of life is not found in what we own, but in the richness of our experiences.”
Ferris lives that truth. His life is not measured in possessions — it is defined by the moments he creates, the people he shares them with and the courage to fully live each one.
And here is the best part — you do not need a parade, a Ferrari or a day off from school to begin. You can start today.
Choose Less Stuff, More Experiences. Fill your days with laughter, meaning and moments that matter most — and step boldly into your Mental Health Warrior journey.
Because life moves pretty fast… and Warriors know exactly how to make it count!
